Saudi Arabia has banned the sale of tobacco to people under the age of 18, as well as smoking in areas where children are present.

The law also bans the import and sale of toys or candy, such as cigarette or bear pictures, which encourage children to smoke.

Welcoming the move, Saudi parents said people started acting responsibly and realized the dangers of second-hand smoking.

The state aims to reduce tobacco consumption by 5% by 2030.

Earlier in 2019, smoking was banned in public places such as airports, restaurants, educational institutions and public transport.

Saudi Arabia has also introduced a tax on tobacco products and increased the price of glass by 100% to curb smoking.  Between 2018 and 2030, the estimated cost of tobacco use will reach 480 billion Saudi riyals.

In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Health has launched anti-smoking clinics to facilitate access to medical treatment and has provided counseling to those who want to quit smoking through its helpline 937.
