Ten mosques closed following reports of COVID-19 cases among worshipers and staff
Riyadh - Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance has announced that it has closed 10 mosques in various parts of the kingdom following reports of coronavirus cases among worshipers and mosque employees. The mosques, call and guidance department in Al-Dalam governorate was also shut down after the department's director and six employees were infected with the virus.
The ministry said in a report on Monday that it had closed five mosques in the Riyadh area within two days, three of them in the Hurrimila governorate, and one each in Aflaj and al-Damal. The closed mosques include three in the Northern Border Region, one in the Al-Mundah Governorate in the Al-Baha region and one in the eastern province of Dammam.
The closure period for sterilization will be between 24 hours and 48 hours, the ministry said. For the mosques in the region's branches and governments, the department will begin sterilization through national companies specializing in sterilization, and this is under coordination between mosques, health issues and the mayors of the regions.
Mosques will be reopened to worshipers after sterilization and ensuring their fitness to receive worshipers. According to the statement, in case of infection of Imam or Honorable, Alternate Imam and Honorable will be assigned to perform this task.
The ministry urged worshipers to take precautionary measures approved by the competent authorities, such as wearing a face mask, carrying a prayer carpet, and maintaining physical distance to protect themselves from deadly infections. The ministry sought the cooperation of citizens and residents by calling the toll-free number 1933 to report any violations or omissions in the use of precautionary measures.
